This is my favorite pizza EVA! The flavors are Uhhh maa zzzzing!! My favorite is the Mediterranean style. I will by a small and eat three slices then save the rest for the next day since it's so filling. As soon as I take a bite I do my Zachary's savory dance steps and hum my Zachary's pizza song.
No one at my job ever had Zachary's deep dish so I brought it for lunch and now it's a special lunch request. They did my song and dance too.
One night at Zachary's there was a couple there that flew in from LA just to get there Zachary's deep dish fix. That alone says a lot about there pizza!
All staff here are always cool.

My sister cousin has never tried Zachary's pizza, I had to take her here, it's still my favorite pizza. Deep dish Mediterranean is divine. My sister cousin chose Bbq chicken and added pepperoni and bacon oh man it was delicious!
Dominick was awesome and courteous. They have great service.
There's a waiter there that is quite an artist, ask him to draw something on your to go bag for your kids. They'd love it. You can get salad, mimosas, beer. I love this spot.. -

Did a to go order over the phone with a 25 minute wait.
Ordered the Zachary's Special with Italian sausage, cheese and veggies on a supposedly thin crust. Initially the pizza smelled like it was gonna be delicious however...once we tried it was not tasty at all. First off the pizza crust had this weird yellow specks with a bland taste. It wasn't even thin crust it ended up being a pan size regular size crust. We also found the skin of an onion underneath the layers of cheese & toppings. That is nasty Zachary's!! Apparently one of your staff decided not to give a shiz and snuck it in there.
To top it off the pizza made us sick. It was so bad. It took 3 full days to get this pizza out of my system. I've not had to deal with that at other pizza places not even at Costco or Mountain Mike's. Not worth the $30 and not worth returning back nor recommend it to others. -

My wife and I are on vacation starting in Berkeley/San Francisco at the time of this review. Let me preface this review by saying that I lived in Berkeley many many years ago in the mid 1990s. The original Zachary's Pizza opened in 1984.
Since we both love Chicago deep dish pizza I recommend that we go to Zachary's. Ten years ago Zachary's was fantastic for deep dish pie, very close to Chicago's pies. Sadly that is Not the case now. We ordered a small deep dish with artichokes, mushrooms & very light on the sauce for take out. When we sat down to enjoy our pie we noticed that there were a lot of artichokes on top, there were 2 small pieces of mushrooms and the sauce on the pie was ridiculous. There had to be almost 1" of sauce. The sauce was cloyingly thick, tasting like tomato paste straight from the can. Lastly it tasted like someone dumped a huge amount of black pepper into the sauce.
If you're ever in the Berkeley area I suggest you wait and plan a trip to Chicago, Zachary's is not worth your time. -

Zachary's Chicago Pizza- Berkeley California
The highlights-
Super cool restaurant in a great neighborhood. Great service. Wonderful pizza! (Go with the deep dish) Such a unique business model- it's employee owned! Enjoy your meal, then take a walk in this really cool eclectic neighborhood! There is lots to see and do a short walk from here. In this way, find street parking wherever you can and know that it's a short stroll and a fun adventure to explore!
The restaurant-
Walking into Zachary's in Berkeley, you really get the feeling that it's a historic building that's being kept alive with good people and good food. Really cool and casual decor (please see photo collage) and the amazing inviting smell of baking pizza really pulls you in and hints at the delights waiting for you. Lots of fun pizza based artwork on the walls by some really legit artist/ fans.
The pizza-
We ordered a "standard" (non-deep dish) cheese and olive pizza and also a deep dish "Zachary's Special" which is a "combo pizza" of Italian sausage, green peppers, onion, mushrooms and cheese. As is the case with most Chicago style deep the "toppings" go on the bottom (on the dough) and the tomato sauce goes on top. I really like the way the sauce gets real heat from the oven and mellows the acid in the tomato sauce.
The restaurant space is rather cozy. An ingenious way to delivering your deep dish pizza to your table is by placing it on it's very own wooden stool next to your table! This is such a great idea! (Pro tip- it also lets you oogle what other people are eating so that you get a free preview before you decide what to order)
The standard olive and cheese pizza was good...but I'm not sure I would say it beats any handmade pizza at many places. The deep dish however is a different story. So thick and rich and the flavors blend so well. So filling. I would say this is super good deep dish pizza! Absolutely delicious!
The neighborhood-
This area of Berkeley is super cool. Really easy to walk and see some neat things. You might plan on spending an hour or so checking it out. We had a blast visiting a really neat bookstore, and enjoyed handmade premium ice cream for dessert at iScream! What a great day in a great neighborhood.
The service-
Super nice employees. Great service. At one point a random dog just ran into the restaurant through the front door. A quick thinking employee used an apron to quick fashion a "leash" to take the dog outside. She gave the dog water, and went about trying to find the owner. So nice to see the caring. It's work going to the Zachary's website and reading about the "employee ownership" policy and how the restaurant was founded.
Check out Zachary's for that pizza fix! They even have a "good health" pizza! All photos taken at the Berkeley location. -

My husband has been talking about Zachary's Chicago Pizza since we met 11 years ago. He knows that I am from Chicago and that while I have never met a pizza I didn't like, I am very particular about my "chicago style" pizzas.
Zachary's is a small, cozy spot, with some pretty awesome artwork on the walls. There was a line when we arrived, but we only waited about 3 minutes for the two large parties ahead of us to be taken to their tables, and we were seated right away.
The staff was incredible. Every person that we interacted with were friendly and very professional. (as a side note, they have a note on their menu asking for respect for staff and other diners, which I absolutely loved! Way to look out for your people!!)
We ordered a couple of beers (the green eyed devil lager, which was AMAZING), the meatball appetizer, and the mushroom and spinach pizza, which is the best way to go, in my opinion.
The meatballs were seasoned well, and were quite delicious.
But the pizza.
I haven't had pizza like this since I moved away from Chicago 14 years ago. (I haven't been home in 7 years, and even when I was home, we don't usually have time for going to get the good pizza)
The crust was absolutely amazing. It didn't get soggy, which MANY places that make a Chicago style pizza struggle with. Premium toppings, thick ,hearty sauce...I was in heaven.
We decided to also order another mushroom and spinach to take back to Vegas with us. A little creativity in making a cooler (since the box didn't fit in ours), and it lasted from about 7:00pm on Saturday till we ate it at 10:30 am on Monday.
If you are in the area and want to try the BEST Chicago style pizza you will get outside of Chicago itself, head to Zachary's. I promise you will not be disappointed.
